Ayuda
30 years ago today, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) became law - marking the first time that federal legislation acknowledged domestic violence and sexual assault as crimes. And thanks to the contributions of advocates like Ayuda alum Leslye Orloff* (pictured), the 1994 VAWA bill specifically included protections to enable immigrant survivors to obtain immigration relief without the assistance of their abusive spouse or parent.Every 5 years since 1994, VAWA has been reauthorized, and these protections have only been expanded.
